This month's read: Varina, by Charles Frazier. The only First Lady of the Confederacy tells the story of her life, her marriage to Jefferson Davis, and the divisions that the Civil War wrought on her household. Told as a memoir to a visitor at the sanitarium where she lives, this is a sympathetic portrait of a woman who opposed the Confederate cause, but stayed with her husband regardless. By the author of Cold Mountain, Varina won the Pulitzer Prize in 2019, and was finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award.
