Real People/Real Stories explores the best in nonfiction history, biography, science, nature, and the arts.

This month's read: The Fifteen: Murder, Retribution, and the Forgotten Story of Nazi POWs in America by William Geroux

During the Second World War, numerous internment camps containing German POWs were located across the U.S. Within these camps, fanatical Nazis killed fifteen German soldiers who became overly friendly with their captors. When the Army condemned the murderers to death, the German High Command threatened to kill fifteen American POWs in retaliation if the sentence was carried out. In the waning days of the war, amidst high level political machinations, the fate of both German and Allied soldiers hung in the balance.
