In Venice, he's disoriented by language and mistrust, and when his wife disappears he is at a loss. At the same time he is beguiled by an English brother and sister. and finding his wife loses its importance. Banville is an expert at creating an unsettling atmosphere that builds to a wholly unexpected climax over a period of a few short days.
