Becoming Marye Bucke: Researching a Woman From 400 Years Ago

Becoming Marye Bucke: Researching a Woman From 400 Years Ago In-Person

Rebecca Suerdieck is a Virginia Historian with an insatiable commitment to sharing lesser-known stories from the past. When she first meets someone, she says she grew up in the 18th century because of her lifelong affiliation with Colonial Williamsburg. Throughout her career she has researched, written and produced many educational programs about early Virginia.

Seeking a deeper way to continue to tell stories about Jamestown, she self-initiated and self-funded the research and recreation of one of the first English women in the New World. Her interpretation of Marye Bucke, the Minister’s Wife has educated thousands of people each year from across the globe since 2006. Her school programs have reached hundreds of classrooms across the country in person and online since 2012, an accomplishment which is recognized nationally, earning her several major accolades.

This presentation is the true story of how Rebecca became “Marye Bucke, The Minister’s Wife at Jamestown.” Attendees will learn what is known about the real Marye Bucke, how this information was revealed, and discover stories of faith in early Virginia.
