Real People, Real Stories: "The Art Spy" In-Person
Real People/Real Stories explores the best in nonfiction history, biography, science, nature, and the arts.
This month's read: The Art Spy: The Extraordinary Untold Tale of WWII Resistance Hero Rose Valland by Michelle Young
This biography tells the remarkable story of Rose Valland, who used her position as a curator of art at the Jeu de Paume museum in Paris to engage in espionage and subterfuge during the Second World War. As a member of the French Resistance, she secretly recorded details of the Nazi plundering of national French and private Jewish-owned art, saving thousands of works of art.
"Young recounts Valland’s brilliance, courage, and sangfroid in enthralling detail as she chronicles her daring work to save the museum’s treasures and her shrewd spying for the Resistance... like Valland's zealous rescue of stolen masterpieces, Young vibrantly restores a hidden treasure to the pantheon of WWII heroes.” — Booklist (starred review)
