This month's read: Appointment in Samarra, by John O'Hara. Gibbsville,  Pennsylvania, 1930: Julian English has social status, money, a beautiful wife, friends. On a drunken whim, he puts it all in jeopardy by throwing a drink in the face of a fellow pillar of the community. Written in 1934, critics complained about the frankness O'Hara used to talk about sex between married couples, but it has come to be recognized as one of the greatest novels of the 20th century. You can also pick up your copy of July's book, A Tree Grows in Brooklyn.)
